In the oppressive kingdom of Kalahvin, ruled by the tyrannical Queen Desma, magic users live in fear. Varine Crestin, a magicless anomaly in a family of powerful witches, finds herself thrust into a dangerous prophecy. Haunted by a past she doesn't fully understand and hunted for the magic she lacks, Varine must undergo five deadly Trials to join the Order, a sanctuary for magic wielders. Each Trial tests a crucial virtue: courage, intelligence, strength, determination, and resourcefulness. Written by S.E. Schaefer and Caitlin Lengerich, Trials of the Order follows Varine's perilous journey as she battles not only external threats but also the insidious doubts gnawing at her memories. Her survival, and the fate of Kalahvin, hang in the balance.

Review Trials of the Order
Wow, "Trials of the Order" completely swept me away! I'm echoing the sentiment of many reviewers – this book is a fantastic blend of dark fantasy, thrilling trials, and compelling characters. While the beginning had a slightly slow burn, it was worth the wait. The pacing picked up beautifully, especially once the trials began, pulling me into a whirlwind of action and emotional turmoil.
I absolutely adored Varine. She’s a strong, complex heroine whose journey resonated deeply with me. She's not perfect; in fact, her vulnerabilities and struggles made her all the more relatable and endearing. Witnessing her growth and resilience throughout the trials was incredibly satisfying. The found family dynamic between Varine, Melba, and Cenric was another standout element – their bond felt genuine and heartwarming, offering a much-needed sense of connection amidst the darkness.
The world-building in Kalahvin is superb. Schaefer and Lengerich created a richly detailed and believable world, full of intrigue and danger. The magic system, while not overly complicated, is fascinating, and the hints of ancient prophecies and powerful forces kept me guessing until the very end. The authors skillfully weave together political intrigue, personal betrayal, and the looming threat of the ruthless Queen, maintaining a constant sense of suspense that kept me hooked.
I found the morally gray characters particularly compelling. The ambiguity surrounding certain motives added layers of complexity to the narrative, keeping me questioning loyalties and alliances until the very last page. This isn't a story where everything is black and white; it's a nuanced exploration of choices, consequences, and the blurred lines between right and wrong. The authors masterfully crafted a sense of uncertainty, leaving me questioning who to trust and eagerly anticipating the answers in the sequel.
The emotional impact of the book cannot be overstated. The betrayals, the losses, and the sheer weight of Varine's journey left me emotionally drained, but in the best way possible. The scenes from around the 60-85% mark, as mentioned by other readers, were particularly impactful, and I found myself utterly captivated by the raw emotion portrayed. It's a testament to the authors' skill that they were able to evoke such a strong emotional response.
While some readers mentioned a slightly jarring transition from the prologue and a rushed ending, I found neither to be overly detrimental to my enjoyment. The prologue, while initially seeming disconnected, ultimately provided a significant payoff later in the story. And while I agree the ending felt a bit abrupt, leaving several intriguing questions unanswered, it served as a perfect setup for the next installment. The cliffhanger leaves you breathlessly anticipating the continuation of Varine's journey and the resolution of the many mysteries left unresolved. Overall, “Trials of the Order” is a must-read for fans of dark fantasy, and I highly recommend it. Five stars from me!
